About the AIJC

The annual African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC), an initiative of the Wits Centre for Journalism (WCJ), is the largest gathering of African investigative journalists on the continent. Now in its 21st year (2025), the conference is usually held over three days late in the year (October/November), where journalists from Africa and elsewhere gather at Wits University to network, share ideas and stories, celebrate excellent, groundbreaking work, and learn from one another through a series of lectures, workshops, masterclasses and seminars.

The annual Carlos Cardoso memorial lecture, supported by the Wits Faculty of Humanities, forms part of the AIJC and honours the memory of Cardoso, a Mozambican journalist who was assassinated while investigating corruption in 2000.

Together with the WCJ and supported by Absa, AIJC implemented the inaugural African Investigative Journalist of the Year Award in 2023, which celebrates outstanding examples of investigative reporting from across the continent. The prestigious award ceremony is held during the conference each year.

Attending the conference is the perfect opportunity to engage with the brightest minds in investigative journalism, gain valuable insights into the future of the industry, and equip yourself with the latest investigative tools and techniques. Keep an eye out for exciting fellowship opportunities leading up to the event each year.
